Burnt Orange & Boots

This is the Texas State Fair.

Home of Flecher's Corny Dogs. All things fried - like oreos and guacamole.

This guy with his Dickies jeans and 10 gallon hat, Big Tex.

And most importantly, home to the Texas / Oklahoma Red River Shootout.

This year, I didn't watch the big game from an NYC bar at Stout or Hill Country. This year was the year of my return. To Texas. And to the Red River Shootout. This year I was right in the action.

Sadly the Longhorns did not quite deliver on their end of the deal. It was sad. But I love the Horns and I will continue to cheer for them even when it's kinda hard to.

She twirls fire batons. It was the halftime battle of the baton twirlers.

Alright, so the game didn't turn out as we'd hoped. The day was only half over! After a morning of sportiness, we switched gears a few hours later and headed out to Cowboy's Stadium for a MUCH anticipated concert!

Next up: Taylor Swift!

Confessions...it was my 2nd Taylor concert. And Lindsey's 4th. What can we say? We can't help but heart her!

She puts on a super fun show. And her sparkly, twirly costume changes don't disappoint. She wore 9 different dresses this night. But not like I was counting or anything...

Telling you...everything is just better with boots.

We were really happy to have glowy sticks. Necessary.

Whew! It was one very long Saturday! Filled with sportiness and sparkles.

Love Texas. Love Taylor. Love spending the whole weekend with Linds.

This year I'm back in Texas for football season. (Wooo!) And this means weekend trips to Austin, and tailgating, and Texas / OU weekend at the fair and lots and lots of burnt orange.

So! I'm especially pumped about football season this year. So pumped in fact that I almost don't mind that my boys aren't even ranked as a top 10 team. Almost.

Oh did I mention the Longhorn Network? Pretty pumped about that too. So is my fellow Longhorn Matthew McConaughey.

T-Minus 10 Hours

10 hours to kick-off! Let the Countdown Begin!

Tonight my Longhorns are taking on Alabama in the National Championship game in Pasadena. I've been looking forward to a Longhorn / SEC thrown down for quite some time now and can hardly contain my excitement!

I wish I were there. But since I am not, I'll be in an NYC bar. Full of fellow Longhorn New Yorkers. We'll all wear our orange. We'll all sing along with the Texas fight song. We'll all cheer for our boys as loud as we can. Just like we would in Pasadena.

Bring it on Alabama. We all know how big you are and how you think you're going to stomp us into the ground.

But just you wait. Pasadena hasn't disappointed us yet.

Heisman Please.

I am kind of in love with Colt McCoy.

Especially after last night's showdown against the Aggies. He (and the Horns) were pretty great. Career-best great, even.



I think this article in today's Dallas Morning News pretty much sums it all up: McCoy's Heroics Heisman Worthy. My favorite part -

"When someone's chasing me," McCoy said, smiling, "I'm real fast."

The Horns 49 - 39 victory takes us 12 - 0 to next week's Big 12 Championship against Nebraska. (A game that my Dad will be attending at the new Cowboys Stadium. Surprise!)

And then? Then I'd be so bold as to say that we're off to Pasadena - Rose Bowl Bound! For an SEC showdown that I can't wait to see!

p.s. Dear Angie, please remember that we are BEST FRIENDS and if there were anyone that you would want to share the Heisman presentation ceremony with, it would be me. And if you could puh-leez work some magic to get me into event with you this year...well, I don't know how I'd repay you. But I'm sure that we could come up with some sort of agreeable compensation.

In the spirit of kicking off Halloween weekend, roomies Caroline, Julia and I had an impromptu pumpkin party!

There was baking of pumpkin-y treats!
Julia baked pumpkin bread. I baked pumpkin-pie smash. The smells from the oven filled our apartment with pumpkin spicy deliciousness.

There was pumpkin carving!
Julia and Seaver bought a pumpkin and Caro decided that it should probably be a Longhorn pumpkin. So I drew the outline of a Longhorn and Seaver carved it up. A very happy Longhorn Jack-o-Lantern!



And of course there were pumpkin seeds!
Julia dug them all out of the pumpkin goo so we could bake them. Kind of the best part of carving a pumpkin if you ask me.

I love any kind of pumpkin-y treat. I love a night of baking with my roomies. I love the delightful smells that fill our apartment. I love joking and giggling and catching up, because sometimes with our busy schedules we go all week without seeing each other. And we laugh a lot.

Pumpkin Party = Happiness. Happy Halloween! And Go Longhorns!

Let Texas Fill My Soul

So I think you can tell by the frequency of Texas-themed blog posts that I am quite fond of my home state. So here's a super short version of my latest Texas-y adventure for your enjoyment. Jamie's quotes in italics.

Welcome to DFW. A quick nights stay at my parents house. Up early Saturday morning. ATX bound!

Road trips definitely require a soundtrack. Southbound 35! From Jamie's "This is what I think Texas sounds like" playlist.

I told Jamie that Texas was exceptionally flat. And treeless. Wow! I think that's the furthest I've ever been able to see. Except from a mountain. HAHA

Do you think I could get some cowboy boots? I really want some and I think it would sound best to say "Oh, you like them? I got them in Texas!"

It's a beautiful day in Austin, Texas. Perfect for tailgating. Oh how I've missed Saturday's with the Bigham's (and Ford's!)

Campus tour! I forgot how hot it was in Texas in September. 92 degrees, wheww!

This is the new Aquatic Complex at the gym. It's like a country club out here!

My only request is for really good Mexican food.
Check. Guero's! The perfect choice for Tex-Mex with outdoor seating while you wait, light-wrapped trees and live music. Oh and the queso...yeah I miss that.

Night out downtown on West 6th! Rooftop bars, more friends, cheap drinks. It's official - New York, you are a rip-off.

Woke up to a gorgeous Sunday morning. Lunched at Shady Grove. Oh this place is perfect! This is exactly how I pictured Austin, little bit hippie, outside, absolutely perfect.

Afternoon driving tour of the Hill Country. I almost forgot how gorgeous it is out there. I kinda fell in love all over again. Thanks to Kayla for being a fabulous tour guide and host!!

3 new pairs of shoes from the outlet mall later (a few more for Jamie, 2 pair for Les - us and shopping always = trouble) and it was back to Big D.

Northbound 35. Is there a song for that? No. Northbound isn't nearly as exciting as Southbound. It is if you're coming from Mexico.

And then, much too soon, our Austin adventure was over.

I dropped Jamie off at her hotel for her conference and spent all day Monday shopping and hanging out with Mom. Couldn't have asked for a better spontaneous weekend.

Thank you Jamie for convincing me that this trip was totally necessary. It so was!

I think it's safe to say that sometimes I just need wide open spaces and a lil Texas sunshine to refill my soul.

gametime: obvious concerns

what? these weren't your first thoughts during saturday's game?



ok, give us a lil credit...we were concerned for the longhorns until the 3rd quarter when they thankfully decided to wake up and play. but we were also really concerned about the buckeye-lei-flowery necklace thing that the wyoming coach had going on.

The Boys are Back!

It's finally football season! Yes! And I couldn't be more pumped for Longhorn football this fall.

I mean, check out highlights of Saturday's season opener. Tell me you don't throw your hands in the air in celebration when McCoy completes a 78-yard pass to Shipley. Oh it's a good year to be a Longhorn.

for those of you who haven't heard, the horns are ranked #2 in the coaches preseason poll. ok, i know, it's JUST the coaches poll and it's preseason and they haven't even played a game yet. but still, #2! just sayin'.

and also for those of you who don't know, i kinda heart colt mccoy. so i'll need to get my hands on next week's issue of espn mag asap! cover story on colt and the horns? yes, please.

are we saying that colt has the potential to take down the infamous tim tebow??? y'all, i can't wait!

if that weren't enough, sporting news has declared the 2009 season "Year of the QB" complete with yet another cover shot of my boy colt. who confidently claims "there will be no debate about how good we are" this year. take that, timmy tebow and your gators.
